[Backstory - Verrity Harkness]
Nov. 25th, 2017 11:40 pmCarpe Horas continuity - Verrity was born in the Mansion in May of 2013, the daughter of Captain Jack Harkness... and either the Warden of Superjail, or Eames. Yes, you read that right, the Captain who said he was "never doing that again" had a slip and wound up doing that again. After her father's murder and vanishing from the Mansion, she too, vanished, falling into his world and being taken in by some space Gypsies (in the colloquial sense, not in the sense of a less than appropriate term for the Romani people). Eventually, after the fall of Torchwood and after meeting Alonso Frain, Jack found her again, still travelling with the Gypsy band, though her mother, sadly, had died, and so Jack took her in. For a time the three of them wandered together as a family, but Verrity needed a more stable life, a chance to have some book learning, and so with some misgivings, Jack sent her to the Time Agency's Academy.
Verrity took to this like the proverbial duck to water. She thrived, eventually becoming a full Time Agent, working her way through the ranks till she reached the administrative level. Once there, she set about reforming the Time Agency: Rather than being a bunch of opportunists, she reshaped them toward a more altruistic goal, that of collecting artifacts in order to preserve them from disaster and loss, leaving clever copies behind.
Extracanonic/Future game continuity - Pretty much the same, other than the process of her conception: she's still Jack's offspring, only he fathered her on one of those Space Gypsies (a very lovely dancer who taught him a few steps even he didn't know) while travelling with them prior to meeting the Doctor. After the fall of Torchwood, he caught up with the band and, as in Carpe Horas continuity, gave his name to her and took her in.
Personality-wise, she's clearly Jack's kid: friendly, gregarious, cheeky-flirtatious with a wide range of people (broadly defined), but a bit more bookish and intellectual, with an eye for great art and literature (She's dated a fair number of great writers: ask her about her bromance with Oscar Wilde, and the time she tried to teach H.P. Lovecraft the foxtrot...). Also, Carpe!Verrity, by virtue of being hooked into Jack's bloodstream for nine months, has his fixed-point-in-time-ness, though her non-Carpe version doesn't have this gift/curse (she looks at it as a gift, though she groks her dad's not quite welcoming it).
